Acid
Hi,I've had one session of chemo so far next one due 15th Oct all being well.
My problem is, Although i'm havinging some side effects and can cope with those my main problem-so far is Acid,I rang my GP and he perscribed Gaviscon which helps for a short while but is there anything else i can do to calm it down?
I don't see my doctor untill 15th and don't like to pester the nurses.
My treatment is Cycophosphsmide and Taxotere (Docetaxel) Just thought i'd ask on here and see if anyone is having the same problem.

and they prescribed Lansoprazole ("Gastro-resistant) tablets. It sorted me out within no time, and I have a big box full left as I didn't need to take it more than a couple of days for it to work. A friend on the site was prescribed something similar the other day so there are obviously several variations on this one. I haven't seen it on supermarket shelves but you could ask a pharmacist. xxx Penny

Hi Cbr 55,
my husband gets acid , he has been prescribed Lanzoprazole, you do not have to wait until 15th October, ring your GP and he should be able to prescribe it for you. You have to take it one and half hours before chemo or one hour and half afterwards if you are on tablet chemo, not sure how you take it with other chemo.
I am sure if you ring your consultants secretary they will get a message to your consultant who will advise you, no point being in agony for another two weeks.

Please be aware that some drugs cannot be mixed, if you have lansoprazole, you cannot take any other "indigestion remedy" such as gaviscon - they will be at war in your digestive system.
Similarly drugs like cyclizine, which has a similar anti- reflux effect but acts on the brain receptors rather than the stomach, will react against other brain receptor drugs like SSRI's (valium etc) and would be nullified by any alcohol.
So please read all the info you can about drugs you are prescribed, and don't mix with any non-prescription drugs without asking your doctor first.
I went through acid reflux, feelings with docetaxel but worse was having hiccoughs for a couple of hours at a time.
I had bad acid I found out it was because I was skimping on my anti sick pills (metoclopramide) once I took them as prescribed I was ok
Yes, it's a timely reminder that we can't just go mix-and-matching all these pills as the fancy takes us. I didn't take anything except the Lansoprazole as it was when I was having radiotherapy without chemo.
I did find that the Metoclopramide wasn't 100% effective in stopping my sickness, by the way. It may be that it has caused you to suffer from acid reflux/indigestion because I was told that Metoclopramide works by emptying the contents of the stoumach more quickly, so I presume the natural acid will be bombarding nothing a lot of the time. I tended to graze in order to avoid the discomfort of an empty stoumach.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the comments, I did in fact get in touch with my GP after talking to the nurse at the Hospital, Although i tried Metoclopramide it didn't help so my GP prescribed Gaviscon and that helped, I've only taken it for about two days and it's gone now.
Thanks for your help.
i am on the same chemo drug as you and have experienced the same acid symptons, it will usually last a few days and on and off over the 3 week cycle. Hope you feel better soon xxxxxx
Hi Dee
After my second dose of chemo I had awful acid indigestion, so much so I was crying in the early hours of the morning it was so bad. My GP prescribed Omeprazol because he said Gaviscon wouldn't touch this type of acid due to chemo, I'm on Cyclophosphomide as well. Hope this helps but I find that there is always something that happens each month and this site is invaluable for the information and help you can get. There is always someone out there willing to listen and help
All the best Jenny
Hi,
The Gaviscon did the trick so far i only seemed to have acid for about three days and now(for now lol) it's gone, Due to have second chemo tomorrow(15th Oct) the hospital have just rang to ask if i feel ok due to the white cells been high, I feel ok!
I did have to have an injection last week to help boost me and i know i'll have to go back the day after chemo to have another one.
My hair has all but gone now and i do think it i started when i was having problems with the white blood count that is when my hair started falling out, I must admit and i know this might sound odd, But it does fascinate me how many different side effects there are and how the body fights this, Hmm i know it's sounds odd but the body is a law unto it's self don't you think?
Hope everyone is doing ok?
Dee.
Yes, it can be fascinating. I never got on with biology at school as I lost interest in the Life Cycle of the Carrot, and sliced my finger open with the scalpel because I'd been chatting to my friend and had missed the all-important instruction from the teacher to SOAK the broad bean before we attempted to slice it in half! Now, I can happily google surgical websites and gaze at the pics absolutely fascinated! Oh, I don't do this all the time - don't want you to think I've turned into some weird ghoul - just that I too have learned to be amazed at the human body, its complexities and its resilience.
Hair loss can also be triggered by other things, even by stress, and I have loads on my hair brush when I am going through difficult patches emotionally.
Did you get the Gaviscon via a paid presciptin? I'm only asking because it can be bought over the counter, and considerably cheaper than the prescription price. I'm only asking because I know what tricks they get up to boost the NHS coffers!

Hello Penny,
Thanks for getting in touch, You sound like me at school as i was always larking about(haven't changed really lol.) What web sites do you look at on Google? I know some people would find this worrying or even a little disturbing but i'm fascinated by the body and how it' works i even watched a programme called Autopys on the TV performed by an a German Doctor- Dr Gunther Van Hagens.
Then when me and my husband were on a weekend break in Amsterdam he had an exhibition there and my hubby said "oh god, you'll want to go to that?" yip lol.. Again it was fascinating, I do tend to think that this is a journey i'm taking one i never thought i would, so while i have the chance i want to look at it from lots of different ways.Odd! but just like me really lol..
Yes i do pay for perscriptions but the Doc did give me a large bottle and like i said it only lasted for three days so i've got off lightly so far ha ha.
I know what your saying about stress but i don't tent to stress about stuff(chemo i mean) As long as they explain everything what there doing and why and what i don't know i'll look up.
At one point my hubby was worrying about me looking on the internet and yes you can frighten yourself, But i am too inquisitive and when it's about me i'm like a sponge i need to know if that makes sense?
I'm not bothered if my hair falls out, it'll grow back and whats a few months.
I hope you don't mind me mentioning but i did read your profile and saw that yours is terminal, Sorry to hear that.
You know it gets my back up at times when i'm talking to friends and they say how brave i'm being, I don't think like that, It's people like you who are the brave ones, Sorry if i've stepped out of place i hope your all right with that.
it's been nice chatting and i hope my rantting about the body hasn't frightened you off, I'm only a little odd lol..
Best wishes. Dee
Can anyone help!
I ve been looking(in vain) for a sticker to place on my bike/car but i'm not having much luck i see you can buy loads from America but i only want two!!
Dee
It's something they fob you off with in case it works. Maybe the Lanzoprazole would work. Before I had cancer, I had a lot of acid and eventually, I was put on to Cimetitdine. which has a commercial name I never could remember. Another drug that does much the same is Zantac, and that works quite well.
I went to Slimming World, and at the same time, cut out butter and all substitutes. Within a week, I could stop taking the Cimetidine, and apart from once or twice, I haven't had acid since, If I wake in the night with a bit of acid, I drink a full glass of water, and that usually improves it enough to get back to sleep. I then avoid fats for a day or two and I'm as good as new. I do have butter, but not so much, because I lke the taste and don't want to be ill.
I hope this helps
