Cat put down

Cat put down

Hi all. Not a subject we are all talking about on here. I had to have my cat Tishoo put down today. He was 18 years old and collapsed twice yesterday. The vet was great, said he had kidney failure, muscle wastage on his back legs which gave him arthritus. The vet said he could give him pain killers for the pain, but do nothing for his kidneys. Although he was quite cherpy this morning, the vet said he only had weeks not months left. So I decided it was for the best to put him down. I held his paw and blubbed like a baby(what a site a 40 yr old bloke crying)He then was gone.
During the last 2-3 months I have laughed and stayed quite jovial about my cancer journey, but this tipped me over the edge. The cat was older than my kids, but was still my baby.lol. Still a bit weepy and feeling down.

Cat put down

I'm so sorry - non pet-owners have no idea about the pain one feels when you have to take that awful decision. I've had to do it on four occasions and it doesn't get any easier. However sick your pet is you feel a double-whammy of loss - the fact that they've died and the fact that you made it happen. I cried buckets, felt like s**t and just wanted to curl up in a ball and make the world go away. You just have to console yourself with the thought that they are out of their misery. Animals don't have the same fear of death that we do - they feel anxious, they feel pain and they can't understand why their bodies don't work properly - two of my dogs kept falling over because their back legs had lost all power. You loved your pet enough to let it go with some dignity.

All the best

How sad for you

Oh how awful for you and your family Tuckerz. I'm a cat lover (just have one at the moment - husband allergic so can't have any more).

A couple of years ago we had to have one of our cats put to sleep she was a beautiful cat both in looks and in nature and it devastated me. I know some people can't understand how you can get attached to animals but when they've been with you for many years they are part of the family.

But I took comfort in the fact she was no longer suffering.

Love is love, whether we

Love is love, whether we bestow it on humans or animals. And when we love, we feel grief at loss. It would be inhuman not to.

Like you, our 'long time cat' that I grew up with, finally got kidney failure, and she had to be put down, because she was suffering. It's the only time I saw my father cry (he was 'very British'!).

But I truly believe that if we 'go on' then so do our pets. I mean, how could it be Heaven without them?

Kind thoughts at a grieving time for you.

Best, Julie.

So Sorry

Awe I'm so sorry about your cat. I had a dog from 5 years old until 19 years old. He was a big part of my life and listened to every heartache and arguement I had throughout my childhood and adolesance. His hips had gone, he was blind for the last couple of years, but got around if you didn't move the furniture and took him walkies around his old haunts, but finally a cancerous tumour spread and in the end we had to persuade my dad to take him to the vets. My dad thought we we're evil and said he should go naturally, but he'd had enough and just wanted to go to sleep. When I see Springer Spaniels with similar markings it makes me a little emotional. People without pets will never understand the unconditional love a pet gives you. We have a little Yorkie now and he has really given my partner so much love and attention whilst going through chemo, that if something happened to him we would be heartbroken. My thoughts are with you xxxx

thankyou

Thankyou to you all. I feel choked as I read your kind words. Thanks again. And the house is so quiet without him already, even though he did sleep most of the time lol.

(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

I have got tears in my eyes after reading your post tuckerz. I know how much my little april means to me and as she has cancer I know that it is only a matter of time till she will be in the same position as your kitty and I too will have to make that decision to say good bye to my closest friend for ever.

But how lovely to think that your kitty was the grand old age of 18. the proof of a well looked after and loved cat.

lol n more (((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))))

Tishoo and Bob

Hi Ian,

We really seem to be living parallel lives at the moment. After a wonderful time at Leicester on Saturday, I stayed up last night until 1:30 while my lovely old moggy Bob slipped away. He had appeared a bit confused on Friday, but by Sunday when we got home, he was unable to walk. I rang the vet, she said if appeared not to be in pain, it was probably just as well to keep him at home, so we brought his basket into the lounge and talked to him and stroked him, until he peacefully passed away.

He wasn't so old as Tishoo but had survived a serious collision with a car when he was just a lad, which left him with few teeth, he'd also suffered from collitis most of his life.

I know he's a peace now and reunited with his lifelong mate Darcy, but they're good guys and I'm sure they'll invite Tishoo to play.

Take care Tuckerz.

sorry

So sorry Marsha, for your loss. We are surly mirrored in our lives at the moment. I keep thinking or I should say we(wife and kids) are expecting him to walk in crying for food at anytime. But sadly he is not. So hopfully he is playing grand daddy to all the felines in the sky, your Bob too.
