When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer I wanted to know everything there was about it and so I went on the internet and browsed lots of sites. Then when I received the paperwork telling me what I had to do regarding my radiotherapy treatment and where I had to go I was very disappointed with it as it didn't tell me the things I wanted to know. Living in the Channel Island meant having to travel to Southampton for treatment which in itself can be a little daunting. I felt very much on my own amongst lots of strangers. I didn't know what to expect when I got to the airport never mind what to expect when I got my treatment. So I worried for days, me the one who is always bubbling over with lots of confidence, always ready with words of reasurance for those who are less than confident. So I was very nervous when I landed, panicking at each stage of my journey, silly really and not good at a time when my body needed to be relaxed ready to fight this cancer. During my stay in Southampton an idea popped into my head and as I had lots of free time inbetween treatments I started work on it straight away. The result is a DVD slide show of photographs that I took showing you various pictures with helpful comments. You can see pictures of what happens when you first arrive, right through your stay, until you get picked up to go back home. It shows you pictures of the Jury hotel and it's amenities, the staff are wonderful by the way! Typical menus and what you can and can't have, the communal room, the kitchen area - is there a washing machine? Next the hospital and it's various waiting rooms, including the room where you have the radiotherapy session, the staff are fantastic too with lots of patience, they had to put up with me after all.... . You can see pictures of the various people who get you to the hospital and back. Finally, what to do with all that extra time, I took a photograph from the 12th floor of the Jury's Inn showing the direction of where everything is, the shops, ferries, trains theatre and much more. When I got back home I put all the photographs together into a DVD slide show. I printed off a few copies and took them round to various places, oncology, doctors, Cancer Bacup, Jury's Inn and the feed back I have had has been wonderful. I am so pleased to have helped so many cancer sufferers and their families in Jersey. I have been trying to get sponsorship so that they can be printed on demand so that patients can keep them instead of having to hand them back but I am struggling, although I have had an offer of 50 discs and am waiting for delivery. Should anyone like one of these DVD's I am quite happy to post one out to you. Please log into my web page (which was born in Southampton last year whilst I was having my treatment, I'm afraid to say I am one of these people that can't just sit around doing nothing!) This link should take you straight to the page with the details on it - http://www.missit-missout.com/cancer-dvd.html If anybody would like to discuss anything with me there is a contact page on there, or if I can help anybody in any way please let me know. Cancer is a horrible disease but we can fight it, our bodies are amazing vessels and with the brain fighting our corner it can virtually stamp out anything, all it takes is a lot of positive thinking and help from family and friends.
Many thanks for reading this far,
Marilyn
