Metal Taste

Metal Taste

Hi Everyone

I am hopeing someone has found some way of easing this awful metal taste I have in my mouth, its driving me crazy!..I started my chemo last wednesday on the day before i had a syringe driver fitted to my arm with diomorphine for my pain, since then this taste just wont go away, has anyone had the same ? and found anything?...ive almost gone thro the contents of my fridge and the usual , polo's, extra strong mints etc etc

Any suggestions ?...lotions potions..i'll try anything!

Thank you

Linda xxx

I really don't know what to

I really don't know what to suggest. It will go away eventually. You need to ask the staff at the Chemo centre, but does anything taste even a bit OK? It's cold comfort, I know. Maybe you are landed with it, but for me, it only lasted a short time. One meal. Try all the things you hate. Even a Macdonalds would taste better afterwards.

Or try things that already taste metallic like tomatoes.

Good luck and I'm sorry I couldn't help. I just couldn't bear you not to have any answers.

Metal Taste

My partner is having chemo and always gets the metal taste. She has found that sucking fresh pineapple chucks helps to rid her mouth of the taste of ir for a short while. Dunno give it go if you like pineapple. x

Hiya. I don't really have

Hiya. I don't really have much advice, but I have heard that using plastic cutlery (is that how you spell it?) instead of metal may help. I agree with the pineapple thing too. Hope the taste goes away soon! All the best xxx

*******CURE FOR METAL TASTE*******

This is a subject that now seems to creep up in various topics the cure for which I have mentioned in a number of my threads.

I have copied part of one of these earlier thread's "Radiotherapy Treatment and ability to Eat Following Extensive Throat and Neck Radiotherapy"

You can see my main story in Other / Multiple Cancer and Lung Cancer forums suffice it to say I have had over 800 hours in patient (six days at a time) multiple Chemo treatments gastroscomy and pegg (feeding tube) + four/ five weeks multiple site radiotherapy - and albeit I should have been pushing up the daisies two years ago I am still fighting multiple cancers and certainly holding my own.

After my extensive Chemo and after about two weeks of Radiotherapy the taste of food had become SO ABSOLUTELY GHASTLY that it was permanently causing NAUSEA.

I could of course just continued to survive on 8 bottles of Fortisip a day through the stomach tube - but I was actually cooking meals for my wife every day and actually fancied eating something and having to fill syringe and inject through the stomach tube was not terribly conducive to having friends for dinner.

THE TIP TO EVERYONE

I talked to people including the Radioloigists, who seemed quite surprised that when they said "how are you today" my reply was OK but I just wish everything I try to eat didn't taste so utterly gashtly. Further discussion and I was asked what do use to eat with? well a knife and fork I replied, Metal? Yes....ah there's your problem go and buy a set of plastic cutlery and also don't eat or dink anything from stoneware crockery.

Within a couple of days I was able to eat a very small amount of "food" and in doing so maintained the ability to swallow.

It seems that the residue of Chemo and or Radiotherapy remains within the mouth and reacts with principally metal cutlery and to a much lesser degree stoneware crockery now in the words of Michael Cain "Not many people know that".

Stop using metal utensils and or stoneware plates mugs etc and within a few days you will find the metallic taste starts to subside - it certainly did for me and lots of oyther users on this site has followed this tip and had good results.

If you want to see the full text of this and other threads I have started look up my profile and the topics I have started ( click the more tag at the bottom of the page) there are quite a few tips about various aspects of getting through problems associated with Cancer treatment etc.

metal taste

Hi Linda horrible isnt it? it does go away eventually i have just had chemo 4 and it lasts for a day then goes off, i put pure apple juice lollys in the freezer that i make in the Ikea moulds on the day after chemo when its really evident they do tend to help a bit. anything is worth a go even eating a Macdonalds as the other lady said its so disgusting its better than the horrid taste!!

Good luck with your chemo journey, it soon passes i am half way through now and it has gone quickly.

best wishes

Metal Taste

Hi Linda

My wife has KC....she had the metal taste for quite a while and hated it, everything tasted bitter too...she dosn't have the problem now as she has lost her taste nearly altogether.
Her best form of relief though was anything sweet....chocolate or particularly cerials Rice Crispies were her fave...and eat spicy food...curry's....and she used a mouth wash quite a lot.....not for the curry's...lol
hope this helps

metal taste

thank you chocolate is just fantastic for taking away the taste, it really works trouble is i want to eat it all the time but hey there is no better time for eating it when you have cancer there is no excuse not to eat as much as you like lol.

thank you kezzie :o)

Could be just me but I think

Could be just me but I think spicy food is good.

I wouldn't normally like curry or things like that
but since I've been in hospital getting chemo those
type of things taste really nice!
