Mixed Tumours of the Salivary Gland

Mixed Tumours of the Salivary Gland

My Husband has been diagnoised with cancer of the salivary gland with secondarys in both lungs. He has had a total glossectomy for pain relief. Unfortunately his types of tumour do not respond to chemo or radio. He is to have a gastric feeding tube fitted before he comes out of hospital.
I am having problems coming to terms with this as not only is he my husband but he's my best friend.
Any advice on any of this would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Shezbert

I am so sorry to read your post. You must feel absolutely shattered. Yes, I think my partner is also my best friend, and I expect that your husband is feeling what I feel - terrible guilt at hurting best friend/partner by developing this. Are you able to have time away from work to have some meaningful time together? I hope that they have given you a cntact number or an appointment with a Cancer MacMillan nurse, as they are very helpful for sorting out any problems (eg financial advice), answering questions and telling you what practical help is available.

All I really want to say is to wish you both the best of luck - and to remember that things may not be as bad as they now seem. I have found that if doctors give you Bad News, it is not necessarily as bad as it sounds. I hope that this site, and all the lovely people on here give you some emotional support. There is also a Chat Room (in fact two in the evening as it is getting so popular!). If you or your husband feel like live interaction with other people in same boat, just drop in and say Hi. With very best wishes xxxx Penny

Thanks Penny

Yes we have been assigned a macmillian nurse and my boss has told me I haven't to worry about anytime I need off. We had a lovely week away before his operation and went to Scotland and the Lakes. I had last week off but I'm going back to work tomorrow as I will need time off when he comes out of hospital. We hope that we'll be able to go to our caravan in the dales for a break as we have had to cancel a trip to Canada in June.

I went in the chat room last night and met Kt who lives five minutes from me.

Thanks for your good wishes
Shelley

Small world

Hi Shelley,

Welcome to the site. Thought i would say hi here too.

Wow ..it is amazing to realise that people live so close to you.

We had just booked a holiday to the Alps when My hubby was diagnosed...we had to cancel it...It was booked through a family friend andthey sent us the money back and a lovely card saying we had first refusal this year. Unfortunately we are not able to go this year because of hubbies reconstruction surgery...but it is on top of the list for our first holiday abroad when we can go.

Love and best wishes

hemiglossectomy

Hi Shezbert
So sorry to hear what you are dealing with. I had a hemiglossectomy in 1992(tumour on right side of tongue).I had a feeding tube for a couple of weeks. Obviously I was 'nt the one looking on!
Thinking of you both.

Best wishes

Heather
