Oncology

Hi heres an update.

Just come back from the oncologist. Should be starting a course of Interferon in about 4 weeks, once my operation scar has healed.(still got the drain in).

Was told that 2 out of 16 nodes were infected. And that I had a 54% chance of it not returning with surgery alone. But a 64.1% if I have the interferon.
Well I suppose you got to go for it. I was told that it is not widly available in the U.K. But is in the world. Here in Wales they said it was the perfered route, and there was no other treatment, as melenoma is resistant to chemo and radiothearpy. I will have 4 weeks of intervenus injections, Monday- Friday. And will probably feel quite bad (flu like symptoms). But should return to normal about 2 weeks after I finish the course. Then I will have 3 monthly check ups, and 6 monthly scans. And any problems I have during this time I can use the melenoma(cancer care cymru) cancr nurse to sort out these, and send me in the right direction, and arrange all my appointments. Having this nurse along side me has already proved valuable as he has put everything into plain English for us. So if by chance you are reading this, thankyou David, from my wife and me and all my family.

Hi there - good news

about the drug - yes, definitely worth taking if it boosts chances from one half to nearly two-thirds. In Wales, as in Scotland, there are more drugs offered than in England. Hope the flu-like side-effects are bearable. It's great that you have someone professional with the time to explain everything to you. So often things are said at break-neck pace with the busy consultant throwing words over his shoulder. Best wishes xxx Penny
