painful throat after radiotherapy
Can anyone give us any advice or share a reassuring story with us? Please! My partner has finished a 33 day couse of radiotherapy due to throat/tongue cancer but is still in agony even though it was completed 10 weeks ago. Initially he was ok and had begun to eat and drink again but the last couple of weeks has seen a complete turnaround and he is even unable to swallow his medication which we have to put in his PEG. He has been seen by his dr who says everything is looking good so we are confident and optimistic that the radiotherapy and chemo have done their job, we would just like to hear from someone who has had a similiar experience who could maybe offer some advice or tell us the happy ending that we are all looking for! Thankyou!

Carrie,
Have received you pm and will respond via pm as there are so many things that we could start discussing I would be playing on the keyboard for a long time.
I thought I would make a brief reply here so people know your request has been seen - PLEASE EVERYBODY REPLY HERE WITH ANY HELP AND ADVICE.

Hiya,
I just wanted to post and say that one of my friends I have met on here has had cancer of the larynx, I'm sure she would reply to this post herself but currently her internet isn't working. Her name is HayleyM and she has a great website which you can access through her profile. I hope you can get some info/hope from her website and I'm sure you will get to chat with her too when she's back online.
Take care,
Katie.
Hiya Katie,
Just wanted to say thankyou for replying, I will take your advice and have a look at HayleyM's website. Glad to see you are in remission and I hope things continue to go well for you.

Dear Carrie
I had 30 doses of radiotherapy on my tongue and throat+an operation on my throat to stretch the gullit but to no avail.I am also fed through a peg which includes my meds.I have found that radiotherapy affects different people in different ways.,and the effects can be long lasting,or raise thier ugly heads at a later date. But if you have seen the dr and he is given the ok then at least that is something. Is your partner able to swallow anything?
Hi Carrie,
I had throat surgery before they found my cancer and had voltarol suppositories(really easy to insert) for the pain and was still able to take them during radiotherapy for the pain, they work instantly for pain and help with swelling, they are fantastic, I take them just before eating and trying to brush my teeth.hope things get better soon.

Sorry I cant help much but I know HayleyM will be able to xx
Hi Carrie, someone already recommended voltorol suppositories for the pain and these are really good. I just wanted to say that I use a peg tube all the time as my swallow never came back after treatment but it doesn't make a lot of difference to my life. I'm in college full time and still do all the normal things even going for lunch with my friends. I just bring a carton of ensure and put it through the peg. one thing is really important though and thats to make sure to keep up the swallowing exercises, it wasn't explained to me how important they are. So even if its painful, take painkillers and then do them. Noreen
