radiotherapy and hair loss?
Hi
Just wondered if anyone had experienced hairloss due to radiotherapy and whether it will grow back or not. I finished radio at the beginning of july and have lost most of the hair at the front of my head, i would have thought it would have stopped but still coming out, although not as much. Information i have been given is conflicting, some leaflets say its permanent while others say it might grow back.
Any experience anyone?

I think that it can be either way, depending upon dosage and location. I hope that yours stops thinning and starts regrowing soon. If I were you I'd ring the radiotherapy department and check on this one. I should have thought that they would have warned you if it had been a permanent thing, and mentioned it on the form that you signed. Lots of love xxxx Penny
PS Have been doing a bit of looking around, and it seems that there is likely to be a little bit of hair loss also at the exit point. However, the Cancer Research site suggests that hair will regrow (certainly my experience), but may be slightly less thick, and also may be a different colour or texture. Why this latter should be the case, I don't know. xxx Penny

Hi,
my mum is having radiation on Weds, for first time, they said that hair loss is likely in places, but more likely underneath, not like when she had chemo she lost all of her hair. Her tumours are one at front right above eye and one at the back bottom, so mum said she thinks maybe the hairloss will be in those areas? She has been told to put aloe vera on her head first before treatment because that will help with the 'sunburn effect', dont know if you tried that?

try to look for the positives, and keep hope alive for your loved ones xxx
Yes, aloe vera ointment is a good soothing and cooling thing to gently rub onto any area treated by radiotherapy. It's good to start a routine of applying this as soon ass possible, rather than waiting for the 'sunburn' to make its appearance. xxx Penny

Thanks Rebecca
My hair fell out at the radiation entry and exit points, very visably at the front of head (entry) and i think the hair im still losing now is underneath at back (exit). When i was having the treatment they gave me some cream but it was just a gentle moisturiser, no-one mentioned the sunburn effect but i think i am suffering it now as head turned a brownish tint and peeling - not painful just unsightly. Blooming eyebrows have fallen out now too gutted as have spent years plucking and shaping the things....ahhh
