Secondary liver cancer following liposarcoma

Secondary liver cancer following liposarcoma

Hi everyone

I have been visiting this site for a while now. My Dad was diagnosed with secondry liver cancer in September 2007. He had had a liposarcoma in his thigh three or four years before that, but his follow up scans had all shown there seemed to be no further problems. However, an unrelated back injury seemed eventually led to an MRI that showed a large tumour in his liver, which had spread to his pelvic bone, his intestines and proably his lungs.

Up until this week, his quality of life has been OK - my Mum is still working full time and he managed on his own in the house during the day. this weekend, he complained of abdominal pain and swelling, which we presumed was ascites. He was admiited to his local acute hospital and today had a scan which showed that there was no fluid in the abdomen, but that the tumour has grown very, very quickly and is now huge.

I am a health professional so feel I should know what to expect next - but I don't. His prognosis was 12 - 18 months in September, but feel that this is probably very optimistic given the rate of tumour growth.

Does anyone have a similar experience? Any information anyone can share would be very welcome. Sorry for such a long message - but it has been good to get this off my chest!

Thank you, Sarah
