Treatment of Myeloma with renal Failure
My husband is recently diagnosed with Myeloma -
because he has Renal Failure he cannot yet have his intensive Chemotherapy. It is frustrating and I just wondered is there anyone out there who can give me some hope that renal function can improve with steroids alone and who maybe has had the same experience and come out the other side towards remission.Heis only 49 which is young in Myeloma terms.

Hi Charlie M, I can't help you with the exact question, but I believe that steroids alone do half of the work during a series of chemotherapy, so if that's all he's getting for now, at least he's getting something powerful!
My husband has myeloma too, diagnosed in February 2008 and he is 45 years old - that's a hard thing for us relatives.
It's quite a long time since you asked, so I hope things are going a bit better for you now. Best wishes.
Best wishes, Clarity.
It sounds like your husband is in a similar situation as my mum, who was only diagnosed 2 weeks ago and also has renal failure. She is now on dialysis 3 times a week, has just had her first course of steriods and round of radiotherapy. I don't know about you but I certainly feel as if I am stumbling about in the dark just now. I promise that as I get information that may be of use I will pass it onto you!
Gxx
Hi charlie,
Hugs to you. I hope this post gives you some hope..
My dad was in intensive care over christmas he had acute renal failure, hyperthermia, double pneumonia, several days on dialysis and blood tranfusions, put basically death was no longer waiting at the door, he had made himself comfortable next to my dads bedside!!
3 months later after nothing short of a miracle my dad was released from hospital. He came to live with me for a while until he was capable of making his own tea, wash in the bath himself and walk to the shop and back.
A couple of weeks after returning home he went to see a different doctor who ran some tests to see why my dad had fallen ill drastically, he weighed 14st and was 5 ft 10, he is now 5 ft 5 and has put weight back on to 10st 7, he was 8 and a half stone when he left me!!
After all the tests were carried out he was diagnosed with myeloma. This had caused major dehydration and my dad collapsing leading to other problems.
He has had 6 doses of chemo, steroids and tablets for his kidneys is happily putting weight back on and is getting ready for his intensive chemo and stem cell harvest then transplant.
So Yes there is hope after renal failure. If my dad can survive having acute renal failure im sure a miracle can be spared for your husband.
p.s my dad is in his early 60s!! your husband has one good thing his age.
hope this brings a few rays of sunshine your way
