Who do you challenge when treatment has been deemed non cost effective!

Hello everyone,

As quite a few will know, since contracting my own cancers (I am still fighting them by the way!) I seem to have come in contact with quite a few other people who I have tried to motivate and help come to terms / fight their own prognosis.

A month or so ago an old colleague contacted me via this site - his story like so many of us involved the sudden shock of discovering he had Cancer in his case serious liver cancer, the cause of which seems to have been traced back to contracting Hep B at operational fire and rescue incident some 20 years ago,in the days when emergency services just "got stuck in" with no personal protection against contamination from bodily fluids / blood etc.

Anyway to get to the point....

His Oncologist has come up with a course of treatment BUT HIS PCT SAID NO - TOO EXPENSIVE! Has anyone been through the same fight and managed to get anywhere?

The chap concerned did lodge an appeal, he has just heard the results of the hearing (which took place in his absence) and has e mailed me the following note.....WHICH IS WHY I ASK FOR ANY ADVICE FROM PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN THROUGH THIS>

Hello Matt,

Just sounding off really. I have just found out that the PCT have refused my appeal on cost effectiveness. It seems that the oncologist asked for 2 x 4 week cycles of the drug at a cost of about £5000.00.

Seems I am not worth that much to them. They did say however that I was an upstanding citizen and a good character but obviously not worth 5K.

Well we have to carry on. Already started contacting people so will keep trying.
Regards
xxxxxxxx

We can cross-reference this to ....

"Petition for Cancer Sufferers", where Tomdog left a link to the general petition where people should be able to get the drugs they need. However, Matt, each of us attempting to sign the Government Petition has been so far unable to get through!

Yes, fine while firemen are GIVING (some of them with their lives) to help Society. However it seems to be Bugger off when they need something back. Reminds me of the case of the Nurse who needed Herceptin.

This government is a shambles. xxx Penny

Who Rights Matter

Why does human rights only come into play if you are a criminal?
Perhaps if we got ourselves locked up while needing treatment we would get it just by shouting "IT'S MY HUMAN RIGHTS".
It makes me feel sick to read such sentiments.
I wish there were something I could do to help, "slumps shoulders and pulls :-( face".

We will all fight together. Just point us in the right direction.

Lots of love to all,

Debbie and April xxxxxxx
